Charlie is our big, lovable boy that we pulled from a high kill dog pound in Ohio where he was at risk of being euthanized due to the pound running out of space. He was being kenneled in the back of a dark garage for months on end, with limited time outdoors each day. He had a bunch of volunteers that were helping him, and were so excited when they found out we were able to rescue him . We are so happy to have pulled him from that horrible fate that was going to happen to him. Charlie's spirit was never broken, and he is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. We believe Charlie is a Shepherd/Rottweiler mix, as he is large dog and is still gaining weight after being thin. He weighs ~70lbs right now, but he should end up being closer to 80lbs. He is housebroken, clean in his kennel, and is very bright and caught onto our shelter routines right off the bat. He loves to be around people, and to go for car rides and walks/hikes. We have had Charlie around some of our other shelter dogs and cats, and he has been well behaved with them. He ignores the cats, and is happy to meet friendly dogs. He met a 12lb Pug and fell in love! Charlie is a big, strong dog. He loves his daily walks/hikes on our doggie trail, and we are working on his leash manners (he does pull hard sometimes). However, he is much improved with his leash training, and responds well with regular correction and treats. He is eager to please the staff and volunteers. Charlie is a gentle giant, and with a little bit of training he will be easier to walk with. When we rescued Charlie, he was neutered and vaccinated by Friends of Fido (a group that helps with covering the costs of pulling the dogs). At that point, Charlie tested positive for Heart worm, but he has received 3 treatments (2 in August, 1 in September 2012). We have since had his bloodwork sent out to a lab recently, and he has tested negative for Heartworm finally. He will be able to have a normal, healthy & active life, but will need to be kept on a strict Heartworm prevention schedule each month.
